Synopsis:
Did you know that America had its own version of Stonehenge? Located in Western Nebraska, Carhenge has become a huge tourist attraction—and also a center of local controversy. “Sculptor” Jim Reinders challenges a community’s definition of art, freedom of political expression, and appropriate land use development. The program focuses on Jim's plight to erect the monument, then to keep it from being dismantled. It also talks about aspects of public art and how in many forms of art it is often more about group unity than the final end-product. Carhenge has become fairly well known and attracts close to 80,000 visitors a year to this town of 9,000. It also has begun to show up on many films, TV commercials, album covers, music videos, and magazines. Scholars, historians, and artists give their views on how this has become such an attraction. It has been called the perfect example of 'Americana.' It all comes together in a humorous and visually stunning documentary.
